About Us

The Britain Brunei Business Forum was founded under the patronage of the British High Commission in Brunei to enable British and Bruneian business people to meet together in order to further trade.

B.B.B.F assists Bruneian business people in finding British partners for enhancing both parties business performance and circulates information about opportunities for business with Britain through the Bruneian business community.

The forum provides a diverse and inclusive network to build opportunities for British, international and local organisations in Brunei with ties to British business.

Our specific aims:

  • Encourage British trade and investment in Brunei and the Asia Pacific region.

  • Be an authoritative voice for British business in Brunei.

  • Provide our members with practical support and advice, delivered via a range of scheduled events and on-line communities.

  • Share knowledge and expertise.

  • Assist Bruneian business people in finding British partners for enhancing both parties’ business performance.

  •  To provide multiple networking opportunities for members in both formal and informal settings.

H.E. Mr. John Virgoe

High Commissioner

His Excellency John Virgoe arrived Brunei Darussalam in August 2020 and presented his credentials to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Dipertuan of Brunei Darussalam on 10 September 2020.

His Excellency was most recently Head of South-East Asia at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London from 2017 to 2020. Prior to that, he was the Head of Joint Anti-Corruption Unit for the Cabinet Office from 2015 to 2017.

Brunei is His Excellency John Virgoe’s fourth overseas posting, having served in Jakarta, Nairobi and Canberra.

Message from the Chair

It gives me great pleasure to meet you in my capacity as the new Chair of BBBF, appointed in March 2021. As a long term BBBF member since 2004 having served as an Honorary Secretary, Treasurer and also as an Executive Committee member, I am proud to have witnessed the growth and development of the forum to the dynamic force it is today.

The BBBF has gone from strength to strength under the leadership of our various Chairs and I am excited to continue to drive us forward in my term.

Our continuing goal is to increase our membership, develop more business and trade opportunities for our members with UK/Bruneian businesses, increase our engagement with local and regional chambers and creating network openings for our members. We want to give you maximum value for your membership and I hope we will continue to receive your support of and participation in our various events.

Siva Subramaniam (Chair)

Sivarajah Subramaniam (Siva) started his career working as a Trainee Manager for Advertising Company Ltd in London, United Kingdom and then as Demand Manager for Johnson & Johnson in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 2001, he came to Brunei to join what was then known as Kensington College of Business as a Management Trainee and Lecturer on both the Business Studies Professional and Academic Programmes. When Kensington was re-named Laksamana College of Business in 2003, Siva became Administration Manager, responsible for setting up and managing the first British private college in Brunei. In 2007, he was promoted to his current position as Chief Operating Officer of the College and in 2015 took up the new role as a Deputy Principal. He has responsibility for management and development of operational site of the college ranging from the marketing plan to development of new courses.

Ambrose Nathan (Honorary Treasurer)
BizAdvize Services Sdn Bhd

Worked in a number of countries in South East Asia for over 20 years including Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Brunei in various positions in the field of Finance. Experience was notably in Price Waterhouse in the management consultancy division specializing in mergers, acquisitions, receivership, corporatisation of government departments and managing an oil palm refinery. Had 16 years with G4S, the largest security company in the world in the role of Finance Director, Financial Controller of South East Asia and retiring as the Country Manager for the operations in Brunei.

Allen Lai
ASEAN & Corporate Affairs, UK-ASEAN Business Council

Based in Brunei, Allen is the Director - ASEAN & Corporate Affairs at the UK-ASEAN Business Council, the leading UK organisation promoting trade and investment between the UK and Southeast Asia's dynamic markets. The UKABC works closely with the UK and ASEAN governments, key partner organisations, influential corporates, experienced SMEs, market experts, and professional services providers. The UKABC have created an extensive UK-ASEAN business network that links UK innovation and expertise with ASEAN’s commercial developments.

Allen is a Queen Elizabeth II Chevening Scholarship Alumnus with an MA Marketing from the University of the West of England in Bristol. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Brunei Darussalam. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.


Calvin Lo

Calvin is a competent Occupational Health & Safety practitioner, who provides independent Health-Safety-Environment (HSE) advisory services in Brunei Darussalam. He is an Alumni member of the National Examinations Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH), a UK independent examinations board; and a Graduate member of the UK Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Having previous academic Business Administration background, he had held top management positions in various organisations and partnerships for almost two decades, before being self-employed. His business management skills and experience coupled with his HSE competencies, had currently enabled him to provide valuable general consultancy services and solutions, to both private businesses and government agencies.

Charles Ting

Charles Ting was born in Sarawak, East Malaysia. He is a graduate from the University of Louisiana, USA. From 1989 - 2009, Charles worked for the British High Commission in Brunei for over 20 years as Management Officer/Commercial Officer. He now runs his own business, Sheng Yu Trading Sdn Bhd, importing and distributing cooperate gifts and stationery items to all major department stores/book stores/ schools and offices in Brunei. The company is the sole distributor for a number of International brands such as Parker Pens, Helix (Oxford) Maths Set-UK, Waterman Pens, Maped Stationery items (France), UHU Glue Stic, UHU DIY, UHU Household, Lamy Pens, Online Pens and Herma Address Labels (Germany)


Dr. Colin Ong, QC
Dr Colin Ong Legal Services

Dr Colin Ong is a Queen’s Counsel of England and Wales with Chambers in London (36 Stone); Counsel at Eldan Law LLP (Singapore) and senior partner of Dr Colin Ong Legal Services (Brunei). He is a highly experienced lead counsel in areas including banking/infrastructure projects/energy/intellectual property/licensing/shipping/telecoms/ technology transfer; and commercial trade-related matters. In 2010, he was made a Master of the Bench of the Inner Temple. He is President, Arbitration Association Brunei Darussalam and Appointments Council, Chinese-European Arbitration Centre (Germany). He is ranked as an elite top 30 arbitration practitioner by the biennial Expert Guides–Best of the Best: Arbitration (2017 & 2019). He is visiting law professor in several countries and listed as a Thought Leader in Arbitration; Construction and Litigation by Who's Who Legal(WWL) 2020. He is described by Chambers & Partners as "an extremely creative and charismatic lawyer... the best cross-examiner....a star performer with a brilliant legal mind.."


Ms Marilyn Graeme

Marilyn is the Head of Corporate Affairs, Brand & Marketing at Standard Chartered Bank where she has built her career for, now, more than half her life.


Ms Miriam Wolber 
Radisson Hotel Brunei

Miriam is the General Manager of Radisson Hotel Brunei. She arrived in Brunei in March 2021.

Miriam has worked in several countries including Germany, UAE, Shanghai and the Philippines.


Rob Tunnell 
CFBT 
Brunei Darussalam

Rob has been working in the education/corporate training sector since 1999, having previously worked in the UK retail banking area, looking after small businesses. In his education roles, Rob has lived and worked on 4 continents, returning to Asia and Brunei in 2015, having previously lived in Sumatra. In Brunei Rob is Head of Training and Learning at the Centre for British Teachers (CfBT). As well as writing and delivering training for CfBT’s 250 internal staff, he also runs corporate training for clients ranging from SMEs to government ministries, as well as a private language centre, helping both adults and children to be better prepared for 21stcentury language and life demands. Over the past twenty years, Rob has presented at several conferences, has headed up business development trips in both Russia and the Ukraine, research projects in Indonesia and, more recently, run training programmes in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon, the latter of which is an ongoing charitable programme working with Syrian refugees. When not working, Rob enjoys running through Brunei’s jungles, travelling as far and wide as possible and kayaking.


Sunita Martin
Findlay (B) Sdn. Bhd. Brunei Darussalam

Sunita is the Managing Director of Findlay, an education services agency in Brunei which provides information and advice services to students intending to pursue their education in the UK and other countries. Before returning to Brunei in 2013, she was an international student adviser at two British universities. Prior to that, she held senior positions in HR Management and Personal Banking in Brunei, Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi and started successful small businesses in Qatar and the U.K.

These experiences inspired Findlay’s unique business model of combining education counselling with staying in touch with their students overseas and providing free employability workshops when graduates return to Brunei. Findlay also provides psychometric career profiling assessments for students to identify their ideal careers and training and consultancy services for corporate clients.
